Enchanted Valley is #FTG
In June 2024, I took two of my closest friends—Sasha and Kelly—on their first real backpacking trip. For Sasha, it was her first non-organized adventure. For Kelly, it was her first-ever time backpacking. We packed our bags, loaded up snacks, and hiked into Enchanted Valley, one of my favorite trails in Washington.
We spent two nights beneath the trees, following the Quinault River deep into the valley. The trail lived up to its name: moss-covered bridges, waterfalls spilling down sheer cliffs, and a calm that wrapped around us like a blanket. We saw a bear (from a safe distance!) and ended the day with a small campfire, laughing until the stars came out.
Three Girls in the Wilderness
Out there, we realized something quietly powerful—we were the only people of color we saw that weekend. three girls, muddy and tired, carrying everything we needed on our backs. It felt special to exist in that space together, to claim it as ours too.
Backpacking can feel intimidating: the gear lists, the unknowns, the miles ahead. I love breaking that down—showing my friends they already have what it takes. You don’t need to be an expert to belong out there. You just need curiosity, snacks, and someone who believes you can do it.
The Stats
Surprises I Packed
- Diptyque Face Wipes: because even in the backcountry, we deserve a little luxury.
- Lots of Chocolate: for Sasha and me—notorious sweets consumers who consider dessert non-negotiable.
- My DIY Ramen Creation: powdered protein bone broth, ramen noodles, hot-sauce packets, and seaweed. 10/10 will make again.
